Spring 2024 LOS ANGELES SOUTHWEST COLLEGE 10th Graders

Student Mariana, Alexia and Rachel attended Art 201, Drawing I at LOS ANGELES SOUTHWEST COLLEGE in spring 2024. Student reflections: “I enjoyed the class a lot this year and would definitely be interested in taking an art class next school year. We learned about different art techniques while having fun and being creative. Plus the supplies were given to us.” Pulse Arts was a 2023-24 recipient of a Nellie Leaman Taft Foundation grant that allowed us to pilot our Dual- Enrollment Studio Arts Program for Los Angeles K-12 students. We are proud to report that this funding supported about 40 students from 2 high schools and 2 middle schools. We will definitely be continuing and expanding this program in the 2024-25 school year.

49th Annual Conference of Black Administrators

Pulse Arts, in collaboration with DAANSEKOU Cultural Arts Collective and the West African Drum and Dance program, organized a truly remarkable event. The 49th Annual Conference of Black, West African Drum and Dance program was designed to highlight the therapeutic benefits of drumming, with the theme of “Finding Solace in Rhythm.” One of the highlights of the event was the participation of the Marlton School for the Deaf middle school class. The students were given a unique opportunity to experience the healing power of drum therapy and were able to fully immerse themselves in the symphony of healing created by the other participants. The program showcased the immense power of drum therapy, not only to heal the body but also the soul. The event demonstrated how coming together to create a symphony of healing can lead to a healthier self. The participants were able to connect with one another through their shared love of music, and they left the event feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

National Deaf History Month is celebrated March 13th to April 15th

The West African Drum and Dance program organized by Pulse Arts brought an extraordinary display of talent to the 49th Annual Conference of Black Administrators in April. The students from Marlton School for the Deaf, who participated in their first community performance of 2024, were exceptional in their performance alongside the brilliant Artistic Director Trice M.P. Their hard work and dedication were evident in their outstanding presentation. The program was a perfect example of the transformative power of the arts, as the students showcased their abilities and talents to the community.
