I grew up in Pasadena, alongside my tribe of cousins who lived in households within blocks of each other spanning from Orange Grove to the south, Arroyo Blvd. to the west, into Altadena to the north and Lake Avenue to the east. We were descendants of people who migrated to California from Georgia and Florida in the early 1920’s.

Adrienne DeVine, Visual Artist

A few settled in Riverside County, but the majority of the clan settled in Pasadena. Over the years and through generations, others have expanded their horizons to live in other cities, states, and countries, but the family has remained deeply rooted in Pasadena and Altadena, where we have celebrated reunions at Brookside Park in Pasadena, and Farnsworth Park in Altadena. Needless to say, many of us have been impacted by the Eaton Fire.

About the coloring pages, “The Twins” is based on a photograph of my twin daughters, taken when they were around 3 or 4 years old. They were sharing a swing that was suspended from a large tree in the idyllic backyard of a home in Altadena. The other pages are abstract versions of a handmade book I made to highlight Adinkra symbols, inspired by my interest in African writing systems. The inclusion of a candle serves as a simple reminder to pause and reflect on the blessings in your life.
